10/04/2011 - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Make a Difference.
Make History.
Make Strides against Breast Cancer on Saturday, October 15 at Schwiebert Riverfront Park in Rock Island.
While Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is new to the Quad Cities it has been a vital part of the American Cancer Societys mission of creating more birthdays since 1993. Since then nearly 7 million participants have raised for than $400 million and last year alone 800,000 walkers raised $60 million to help fight this disease.
By participating in this upcoming ACS event, you are helping to support those who have been diagnosed as well as funding research that will someday lead to a cure for cancer. Interestingly enough breast cancer research has led to advancements in fighting other cancers and vice versa.
Thanks to fundraising supporters like you, the American Cancer Society has played a role in nearly every major cancer research breakthrough in recent history, including:
-Funding research into breast-conserving surgery, using lumpectomy plus radiation for treatment
-Establishing mammography as the gold standard to find breast cancer early
-Discovering lifesaving treatments (such as Herceptin) to improve breast cancer survival and drugs (such as Tamoxifen) to reduce the risk of second or first breast cancer
-Discovering genes for inherited breast and colon cancer
-Confirming the knowledge that genetics, diet, lack of exercise, and alcohol abuse can increase a person's cancer risk.
-Discovering cancer-causing oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes
Currently, breast cancer research projects are under way at institutions across the country, thanks in part to the funds raised by participants of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. With your help, we can blaze a trail toward the next great discovery and make strides to end breast cancer.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is also unique in that the spotlight of the event is placed on the survivors, not the winners of the race. The ACS also does not require participants to raise thousands of dollars although they do recommend setting a goal of $200. Everyone is encouraged to participate. And this is an event that you dont have to spend months training for because at the end of the day everyone is a winner! The 5k course is also handicap accessible and you are not required to walk, run or jog the entire course if you choose not to.
The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is as unique and special as the story that motivates you. Each step you take is personal, and together we are helping create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays.
